Age Of Iron By Angus Watson, About The Book
Bloodthirsty druids and battle-hardened Iron Age warriors collide in the biggest epic fantasy debut release of 2014.
LEGENDS AREN'T BORN. THEY'RE FORGED.
Dug Sealskinner is a down-on-his-luck mercenary travelling south to join up with King Zadar's army. But he keeps rescuing the wrong people.
First, Spring, a child he finds scavenging on the battlefield, and then Lowa, one of Zadar's most fearsome warriors, who's vowed revenge on the king for her sister's execution.
Now Dug's on the wrong side of that thousands-strong army he hoped to join - and worse, Zadar has bloodthirsty druid magic on his side. All Dug has is his war hammer, one rescued child and one unpredictable, highly-trained warrior with a lust for revenge that's going to get them all killed . . .
It's a glorious day to die
Watson brings the setting to life vividly and his writing is entertaining and gripping. It really is a fantastic debut. I only have one little problem, which won't be a problem for many of you, I found it sometimes to be a little too graphic, there was times id close the book make myself a cup of tea smoke a cigarette to just give me a moment away from the violence, now the violence has to be in this book thats what it was like back then and the book isn't entirely historically correct but who cares, the book needed to be violent and brutal. The scene that really got to me was with the two mothers and the baby, it was gut wrenching and it was hard to read, now this is a good thing it evoked a strong emotion stories should do this! So my problem has no reflection on the book it makes for good reading and other people won't find it a problem.
To summarise this a fantastic debut novel, dark, entertaining and gripping.
